But they are not meant to suggest that a meaning we are most familiar with today wasn't also used alongside it, for in many examples it was. The word Winter always meant the season. But in earlier periods it was also often somewhat metaphorically used to express "year", present also in compounds such as twinter (twi + winter) "two years old" ___> "two year old animal"
